Informative tour led by a Naturalist
Visits help contribute towards care for Elephants and upkeep of facilities
An ethical and responsible way of interacting with Elephants
Terms and Conditions
Elephants are among the most loved animals in the world. Sadly, while African elephants are being hunted for their ivory tusks, their Asian counterparts are captured from the wild for private ownership and commercial use, where they are often manhandled and abused. But not all private owners are bad; some of them have a change of heart, and we are hoping this phenomenon turns into an epidemic. A religious and spiritual organisation from Tamil Nadu handed over three of their temple elephants to the animal welfare organisations TREE Foundation, Chennai and WRRC (Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre), Bengaluru. Both organisations are much admired for their work in the space of wildlife rescue and welfare, and together, they have setup an Elephant Care Facility near Pondicherry to help rehabilitate the temple elephants. At the facility, Elephants have the freedom to move around without chains in a natural, protected, near-wild space, to sleep, walk, play or bathe under benevolent human monitoring, and indulge in other normal behaviour. On a visit to the facility you can observe the elephants being bathed and fed, walk alongside the mahouts and the elephants to the coconut grove, watch them, the elephants’ not the mahout ?, dust bathing, grazing and socializing in the grove from a safe distance. Guest visits help raise funds which go towards caring for these Elephants, for the upkeep of their surroundings and for providing medical and foot care to other needy elephants in captivity. There are NO rides offered. This is an ethical and responsibly run centre.
